Driving in the rain, snow or any other winter conditions can be dangerous. Here Tow Cars gives you a few tips to prepare you and your car for driving during the winter season.

Pre-Drive Checks

As the winter season comes there are several things you can do to make sure you car is prepared. As the temperature drops, the power in your vehicles battery drops as well. It’s a good idea to test your battery at the beginning of each winter season. Next make sure your cooling system is in good working order and that all your fluids are topped off.  This helps get rid of icy windshields and snow build up. Check your wiper blades and replace them if needed.

Another tip to prepare your car for winter is checking your tires pressure and tread. As temperature drops, tire pressure drops drastically. If you are using all-season tires, check the tread on the tires and replace them if they have less than 2/32 of an inch left. In heavy snow or icy areas it’s not a bad idea to invest in winter tires with a deeper, more flexible tread. This helps with grip and prevents the vehicle from sliding as easy.

Plan Your Drive

First, you have to consider whether the trip is important enough to risk your personal safety. If you do have to go out, you’ll want to plan your route. Maybe even let another person know your travels in case of an emergency. Even short drives in bad weather can end up lasting hours. It’s a good idea to prepare both yourself and your car for a lengthier trip than expected. Have plenty of fuel and an emergency kit in case you get stuck.

Practice Safe Driving

Exceeding your tires’ ability to maintain grip can result in a skid, spin, or collision. That means anticipating stops, corners, and hills well ahead of time and adjusting your momentum early. You’ll want to plan slow, wide turns, and avoid whipping the steering wheel. Accelerate slowly to make sure you gain traction. Also go slowly when you change lanes, turn, and pull out when driving in the snow or ice. Notice the speed of other drivers on the road. Going too slowly can cause as much risk as driving too fast. For safe winter driving, find a speed you feel comfortable with and stay in the main flow of traffic.
