Keysborough Turkish Islamic and Cultural Centre
Keysborough Turkish Islamic and Cultural Centre Inc. was established in 1977. Since its inception, it has provided a wide range of services to the important Turkish and Muslim communities.
There are many existing facilities on 396 Greens Road. Council approval has been granted for the following: a multipurpose hall, two parking lots, residence, overflow parking, classrooms and soccer fields.
The Centre is located in a municipality that hosts large numbers of ethnic groups from diverse religious and cultural faiths. The organisation’s goal is to create a multi-purpose center that can accommodate not only the Turkish community but also the wider community. Its primary goal is to offer more efficient and effective services while ensuring that its members’ interests are protected.
The Centre offers many services, including: information sessions with selected speakers for schools and groups in the community; night/evening or weekend classes that often concern culture and global awareness; community activities throughout week; teaching Qu’ranic scripture; meetings for elderly groups; meetings for women’s groups; tuition and guidance for local youth; training and playing junior and senior soccer; and perhaps the most important, the full-time education of primary and secondary students.
The Centre is well-known for its two annual religious festivals. The festivals bring together not only the Greater Dandenong Muslim Community, but also Muslim communities from across Melbourne. They have been a success for almost ten years and continue to attract large audiences. Because of the positive social message the festivals represent, the organisation invests a lot of effort and time into their organization. They are a symbol for the community as they are attended by prominent people.
