Venerable Vijitha arrived to Australia in 1993 as a resident monk at Springvale’s Sri Lankan Buddist Temple, Victoria. He transformed it to become a highly successful Sri Lankan place for worship over the following six years. Venerable Vijitha moved into the Keysborough premises in 2001. He established cordial relationships with all Temples in Melbourne, especially those belonging to the Cambodian, Laotian and Burmese communities. He has been a regular Buddhist service provider at the Dhamma sarana Vihara and also ran a Sunday School that was very popular. It has two sections Dhamma and Sinhala Language and culture. Over 300 children attended Sunday school. His popularity and rapport with children is remarkable.

The Buddhist Sri Lankan Association purchased the property in 1999. Under his capable guidance, Dhammasarana Vihara’s initial construction and establishment was completed. This facility now serves a large number of Sri Lankan devotees who are deeply Indebted to him and are grateful for his tireless contribution to the community.

In January 2003, Venerable Vijitha was awarded ‘Siri Vipulasiri Vanshavathansa Buddha Sasana Pradeepayamana Sasan Shobhana SaddhammaKiththissiri’ honorary title by Sri Lanka Ramanna Maha Nikaya for his outstanding Dhammaduta services overseas.

Venerable Vijitha thera has been awarded several awards. The Ramanna Nikaya awarded the Chief Sanghanayaka position for Australia. This award was presented by the venerable Wewaldeniye Mehalankara Thero on 15 January 2011.
