Spring cleaning is a yearly ritual for many, and while most people focus on cleaning their homes, not everyone thinks to include their vehicles.
Granted, it’s often a case of it being easier to keep a relatively small vehicle clean and working compared to an entire household, yet many are guilty of forgetting about car maintenance during a spring clean.
Taking the time to regularly clean and look over your vehicle is a great way to extend its lifespan and avoid expensive repairs down the line.
Here are eight vehicle maintenance tips to include when spring cleaning at home:
1. Complete a deep clean
A deep clean of your vehicle is always worth doing during your spring clean. This means cleaning everything – not just the outside! Wash all the exterior, including the windows, roof, side mirrors, and rims.
Then, move on to the interior. Remove all clutter and trash from inside, remove the mats and shake them down, and then give the entire inside a thorough vacuum. Clean the inside of the windows and wipe down your dashboard – now your vehicle will feel like new!
2. Replace wiper blades
Your wipers have probably been working overdrive in the winter, so now is a good time to swap them out for a new set. Wipers should be replaced at least once a year, as this ensures they keep the windshield clean and streak-free, while also preventing damage.
3. Swap your tires
If you’ve been using winter tires, now is the perfect time to swap them out for summer tires. Winter tires don’t perform as well in warm weather, wearing down at a much faster rate while being less responsive. Instead, get a fresh set of summer tires to see you through the seasons.
4. Check tires
For those that don’t need (or want) to use different tires throughout the year, it’s still a good idea to inspect them for signs of wear and tear. Check tire pressure to make sure they are not over or underinflated, while inspecting the tread for signs of wearing.
5. Examine Engine Oil
Winter may have forced your engine oil to work overtime, therefore it’s worth checking it to see if you are due for an oil change. Simply use the dipstick to check the overall condition of the oil and how much is left.
6. Inspect the windshield
Windshields are susceptible to cracks and chips more than any part of the vehicle, so take the time to look for signs of damage. The last thing you want is for the windshield to shatter mid-commute!
If there is a chip or crack, don’t ignore it, as a windshield is vital for structural integrity, and it could be very dangerous if compromised and there is an auto accident.
7. Take a look under the hood
The last thing to do for your vehicle spring cleaning and maintenance is to check beneath the hood. Just have a look to see if there are any troubling signs, paying attention to belts and hoses, as the cold often takes a toll on them.
